Dawn Mthombeni is currently Director of Risk in Absa’s Engineering Services Department. She has been with Absa since 2018, and before that she was part of the Barclays Africa group.
Absa has appointed one of its longtime black executives to its CEO’s office to provide operational support and strategic advice to Arrie Rautenbach.
The banking group said Dawn Mthombeni will start a new role as an executive in the CEO’s office on August 1. Her support to Rautenbach will ensure that the group’s mandates, priorities and agenda of the CEO’s office are executed effectively.
The bank said this is in line with its commitment to “grow its own wood” that Rautenbach spoke about when he recently announced changes to the bank’s operating structure.
During this announcement, Absa promoted several black executives to be part of the group’s exco, bringing black representation closer to its 50% leadership level. However, Mthombeni will not sit on the group’s exco.

“As we intensify our efforts to be competitive and excite our customers, the Absa Group remains committed to rewarding and promoting dedicated and talented individuals,” Rautenbach said of Mthombeni’s appointment. “His appointment is another key step in our ongoing journey to build a leading African bank with diverse and inclusive leadership,” he added.
Mthombeni is currently Chief Risk Officer in Absa’s Engineering Services Department. She has been with Absa since 2018, and before that she was part of the bank’s former parent company, Barclays Africa Group.
She has served both groups in several leadership roles, including as COO of Corporate and Investment Banking outside of South Africa. Before that, she was with Standard Bank for almost 15 years and FNB for four years.
Rautenbach praised her for her mastery of business change initiatives and for building and executing risk mitigation strategies.
Mthombeni holds a degree in Industrial Psychology, an MBA from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and a Master of Philosophy Phil in Development Finance from the University of Stellenbosch. She also recently completed an advanced management program with IMD in Switzerland. In addition, she is a member of the Africa Leadership Initiative South Africa, where she contributes to solving problems specific to the African continent.
